Dog’s name, River, is becoming an ironic label

It turns out I named a dog that can't swim after a body of water. As a good dog owner and San Marcos resident, I, of course, wanted to take my dog to the river and let her swim, chase tennis balls and do other dog stuff. Too bad that it turns out River may be the first ever dog that doesn't have the doggy paddle ingrained in her DNA.That's why I've found myself, on my last two trips to the river, giving my dog what I think may be the first ever canine swimming lessons. I figured I wouldn't have to teach swimming until I have a kid, and then I can enroll him in proper lessons so he learns not to take shortcuts. Of course, public pools won't take seven-month old Irish Setters into their swimming tutorial programs and I wouldn't pay for it anyway. That left me, River's hefty owner, to handle the process of teaching her how to swim.

Housebroken pet knows enough to do his business in the bathroom

In the fall, we adopted Charlie from a rescue shelter. He was cute, cuddly, and a complete mess. Matted hair. An ear infection. An eye infection. And bathroom habits that would shame any well-behaved animal.

Well, a trip to the vet took care of the infections. And then the groomer, Marianne, had her way with the clippers. Our new little Shih-Tzu/Lhasa Apso mix was bald. And cuter. The only odd thing revealed by the haircut was that his little nose and mouth seemed to be pushed to his right, giving him a perpetually quizzical look.

We took this in stride.

But the house-breaking issue was something else. He peed and pooped everywhere but outside. And we gave him plenty of fresh-air opportunities.

We figured he'd been shuffled around so much that his bathroom priorities had been scrambled.

Calif. family's lost dog found after 7 years, but not everyone is ...

FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - There was no puppy love when Jewel met Jade. Jewel, the Correy family pet, disappeared seven years ago. Misty Correy and her children hoped the microchip in the dog's back would help find the Siberian husky.

"After three months, we figured we would never see Jewel again," Correy said. So they got Jade, a yellow Labrador.

Last month, the family got a call from a humane society in Yuma. An animal control officer had found Jewel wandering down an empty road and they had traced her through the chip.

It's unclear how Jewel got to Arizona and became lost again.

Correy's daughter, Breezy, 16, and her older brother drove for 14 hours to retrieve Jewel.

"I hugged her all the way home," Breezy said.
