| Lawrence County man says his kittens have "rock-star" value
-- Mitchell Morris needs a new boat motor and a new heart. Now he's counting on his 13 cats to help him get them. An unlucky number? "It might be lucky this time," said his wife, Robbie, glancing at a basket of 10 kittens they believe are part bobcat. Three mama cats lounge around their headquarters in an elegant pink and white barn in Lawrence County. But there'll be no more barn mice for these special kitties, Morris says, because he's been promised "thousands of dollars" for them by a breeder in Washington state. They are getting Delta tickets for flights to new homes across the country. Seattle-area breeder Carol Ann Brewer, who got Pixie-Bobs approved as a breed, believes they are this type of cat, worth $300 to $1,500 each.
Editor's Diary: Snowey the Dog
I don't want to write about politics this time around, or journalism or even my life abroad. The only thing really on mind these days is my friend Snowey. I got my first dog in 2001, a Siberian Husky named Mohawk. Actually, I could say he just happened to me. I had never wanted a canine companion because of my busy and mobilie lifestyle. But I dreamt about him before I met him (if I even knew what a Husky looked like then) he and I in my convertible with the top down, singing with our faces to the sun. So I said yes. When Mohawk first arrived, I didn't even know how to take him for a walk - he was a complete mystery to me. But he got under my skin and soon, I decided to get my new friend a companion for the times when he was alone at home. I saw Snowey on a website for Samoyeds that need a home.
San Marcos tidbits
Until 1848, Hays County was part of Travis and Bastrop counties, when it was organized with San Marcos as the county seat. The County was named for Capt. John Coffee Hays, a Texas Ranger. A statue of Hays, by sculptor Jason Scull, now stands on the courthouse grounds. The present Hays County Courthouse is the fourth building to serve that purpose. The first three courthouses were destroyed by arson or damaged by shifting earth caused by underground springs. The present building was erected in 1909 and restored between 1997 and 1999. The Old Hays County Jail (Fredericksburg Street) was built in 1884 and designed by Edward Northcraft, an architect of Old Main. It served as the county jail until 1937, when frequent breakouts and repairs necessitated a new one. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a 55-pound iron triangle hung from a tree on the north side of the courthouse.
Caesarean for Labrador Retriever
SHIMOGA: On Sunday at 12 noon, three-year-old Chintu, a female Labrador Retriever, was rushed to the Veterinary Speciality Centre in the city with difficulty in delivering her pups. Dr O S Prakash, an expert in veterinary sciences, took charge of the case. The female dog had completed 63 days of gestation. He decided to treat Chintu for induction of labour but finally decided to conduct a caesarean. Over the next two hours, Prakash and his assistants strived hard to conduct a successful operation. The family of Labrador is hale and healthy. Chintu had to spend about one day at the hospital. Now, she is actively feeding her pups, four males and three females, at her house. There has been a lot of disagreement among people about the operation.
Inmates, dogs get new lease on life at prison
Two Mesa women are saving dogs and improving prisoners, bringing out the human side of murderers from Alaska and Hawaii with long sentences from bloody crimes committed decades ago. Shannon Holstein, of Kokopelli Dog and Puppy Training, and Kathy Swaney, of Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue, are on a mission to save dogs from euthanasia, making less popular breeds and mutts more adoptable through extensive training by inmates at the Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy. "It gives them purpose," Holstein said about the inmates. "It gives the dogs a second chance. These dogs in eight weeks get far more training than they would at home." .
