Crazy canine competition

- Dusty whimpered as he watched his toy duck float away, but the golden retriever was leery of jumping off a 3-foot-high dock to retrieve it.

Chris Gates and his 12-year-old daughter, Brittany, petted, coaxed and splashed Dusty, as other dog owners standing around the small pond at Forever Friends Pet Care Center yelled encouraging words.

After several tries, Gates did what any dog-loving dad would do. He jumped into the pond. Dusty eventually followed.

"Did I have the arc?" joked a dripping-wet Gates.

Welcome to DockDogs, where dog owners end up having as much fun as their dogs - maybe more. The sport, often called "Big Air," first appeared on ESPN in 2000 and since has become the fastest-growing dog activity in the country, says Tina McLaughlin, president of Buckeye DockDogs, Ohio's only club.

Local bulldog is Chicago mascot

Meatball arrived here Friday.

Unless greetings at the Avalon Estates home of Dominic and Bernice Marino count for anything.

By Saturday morning Meatball a 3-year-old, rescued, pure-bred, 52-pound English bulldog was basking in the sunshine with his traveling companion Alice Bean and owner/activist Molly Marino.

The trip from the Windy City was grueling, but not near the pace that Meatball has been living since being named winner of Fans Best Friend.

Meatball, who owes his life to Marino, a 1991 Howland High School graduate and marketing director at a Chicago investment research company, was chosen as the official mascot for Comcast SportsNets advertising campaign that hypes live games broadcast for the Chicago sports teams the White Sox, Bulls, Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks.

Lock Alarm Screams at 100 Decibels

This Lock Alarm from Skymall comes with a 24 inch cable and will alarm with a shrill of 100 decibels if tampered with. Use the cable and combination lock to secure your bike, laptop or briefcase and if the lock is tampered with or the cable is cut and a sound equivalent to the loudness of a jackhammer will bring some attention.

The Lock Alarm also has a motion sensor that can be set to go off with any movement. A short time delay lets you open the lock with the combination before the alarm sounds, but if you get it wrong a couple times get ready to cover your ears. It runs on batteries (which can only be removed when unlocked) and it retails for just under $25. While the cable is nice on this one, we're still more partial to the looks of the Doberman.

Rusty's 1200km amazing journey

RUSTY, a dog given up for dead, has shocked everyone after appearing just north of Adelaide -- six months after disappearing from his backyard 1200km away in Canberra.

The dog, who somehow travelled across state borders to Two Wells, yesterday received star treatment as he left Adelaide with a dog handler.

Amazing journey: Click here to see a map of Rusty's 1200km journey.

How did the microchipped four-year-old bull terrier-cross cover the distance?

"One thing is for sure, he didn't walk," Rusty's owner, Shane Gowen, 21, said.

"Maybe he met a truckie who took him for a ride?"

SA RSPCA spokeswoman Aimee McKay said: "We have never picked up a dog so far from its home."
