Boxer Dog Receives Bravery Award

Boxer dog Cally recieved a PDSA Commendation yesterday (29 May) after she led her owner, Nick Hurle, to injured farm manager, Peter Gurney, who was pinned down by two half-tonne bales of silage at Pinner Park Farm.

The special presentation was held at Pinner PDSA shop on Bridge Street on Tuesday 29 May at 4.30pm.

Recounting the story, Nick Hurle, 60, said: "Last March I was taking my usual morning walk with Cally near Pinner Park Farm when she ran off. When she came back, she insisted that I follow her. Suddenly, I could hear a man crying out in pain and saw large plastic bales, which are normally stacked neatly, scattered across the farmyard. I ran over and realised he had been crushed by two of the bales. If it wasn't for Cally I would never have found him. I quickly rang 999."

Farm Manager, Peter Gurney, 60, said: "I was using my tractor to bring the silage down to feed the cows.

Crooks use the Web and puppies in scam

PHOENIX (AP) - Ads appearing in Arizona online and print classifieds offer English Bulldog and Yorkshire Terrier puppies and all you do is pay for shipping. The hitch is when contacted by e-mail, the giver says they're on a religious mission in Africa and they need a few hundred dollars to ship the dog.

The con artists get the money, and the dog, if there ever was one, is never shipped. The Better Business Bureau and the American Kennel Club have issued warnings about the scam.

Loss of beloved dog has left a huge hole for Fergus family

Our family has lived in Fergus Falls since 2002. We have really liked it here. Until today I loved my new home, but today May 24, 2007, I don't.

My companion of only 1 1/2 years was taken from me. He was a loveable brown and white Basset Hound named Good Will Hounding. He was my baby. He was one of the only things that brightened my two sons day. Both have ADHD and one is Autistic. He was one of the only things that calmed them down. Not to mention that I don't know what to do with our other dog, Graceland. She misses him so much. She just looks for him everywhere.

This is all due to the fact that someone killed him in front of our house by hitting him with a vehicle.

I don't know who did it. However I do know it is due to carelessness on the part of that person. You see our home is located just west of the intersection of Broadway and Lincoln Avenue.

Mini-park is a fine idea, but . . .

A place for Marvin Weinberger's tenants at Ashford Club Apartments to walk their dogs. Maybe even a connection between Winthrop and McCord parks.

Now, the footpath is the Betton Hills Nature Center. There's a small amphitheater, a re-created Indian mound, a picnic area, a "ring of fire," fences, bridges, a formal entrance - and, to be sure, dog-litter stations and a water fountain for dogs.

Editor's Diary: Snowey the Dog

I don't want to write about politics this time around, or journalism or even my life abroad. The only thing really on mind these days is my friend Snowey.

I got my first dog in 2001, a Siberian Husky named Mohawk. Actually, I could say he just happened to me. I had never wanted a canine companion because of my busy and mobilie lifestyle. But I dreamt about him before I met him (if I even knew what a Husky looked like then) he and I in my convertible with the top down, singing with our faces to the sun. So I said yes.

When Mohawk first arrived, I didn't even know how to take him for a walk - he was a complete mystery to me. But he got under my skin and soon, I decided to get my new friend a companion for the times when he was alone at home.

I saw Snowey on a website for Samoyeds that need a home.
