Gambled and lost: Patricia Carley

Now a litigation attorney, she grew up in a solidly middle-class family and raced through law school, graduating at 24. About 10 years later, in 2002, she began work at a small firm that didn't provide health coverage. A healthy young woman, she didn't try to get it on her own.

"I'm not going to spend $400 a month for insurance," she remembers thinking at the time, knowing that she would have had to purchase coverage on the expensive individual market. "I'm not going to get cancer, not going to have a heart attack, and if I get into a car accident, someone's insurance will cover my medical expenses."

She didn't anticipate the accident that would put her in the emergency room and stick her with bills that took years to settle.

Patricia, who lives in Sparta and practices in Mount Arlington, is one of the growing number of middle- and upper-middle-class adults who go for extended stretches without health insurance.

Loss of beloved dog has left a huge hole for Fergus family

Our family has lived in Fergus Falls since 2002. We have really liked it here. Until today I loved my new home, but today May 24, 2007, I don't.

My companion of only 1 1/2 years was taken from me. He was a loveable brown and white Basset Hound named Good Will Hounding. He was my baby. He was one of the only things that brightened my two sons day. Both have ADHD and one is Autistic. He was one of the only things that calmed them down. Not to mention that I don't know what to do with our other dog, Graceland. She misses him so much. She just looks for him everywhere.

This is all due to the fact that someone killed him in front of our house by hitting him with a vehicle.

I don't know who did it. However I do know it is due to carelessness on the part of that person. You see our home is located just west of the intersection of Broadway and Lincoln Avenue.

Calif. family's lost dog found after 7 years, but not everyone is ...

FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - There was no puppy love when Jewel met Jade. Jewel, the Correy family pet, disappeared seven years ago. Misty Correy and her children hoped the microchip in the dog's back would help find the Siberian husky.

"After three months, we figured we would never see Jewel again," Correy said. So they got Jade, a yellow Labrador.

Last month, the family got a call from a humane society in Yuma. An animal control officer had found Jewel wandering down an empty road and they had traced her through the chip.

It's unclear how Jewel got to Arizona and became lost again.

Correy's daughter, Breezy, 16, and her older brother drove for 14 hours to retrieve Jewel.

"I hugged her all the way home," Breezy said.

Third loose pit bull reported in Wilmington

For the third time in four days, a pit bull was reported loose in Wilmington, but Clinton County Dog Warden Danny Delawder said the dog never left its yard.

Wilmington police responded to a Wednesday morning incident on Vine Street of a pit bull allegedly chasing children, according to a police report. Upon arrival, Delawder said the dog was friendly.

George Tribune, of North Spring Street, was listed as the dog's owner, according to the police report. He was not charged in the incident but was given a notice. The dog was not acting aggressively, according to the report.

"The people that called it out said the dog was charging them, and they couldn't get out of the house," Delawder said. "The dog never left the yard. We had no problems with it.
