Inmates, dogs get new lease on life at prison

Two Mesa women are saving dogs and improving prisoners, bringing out the human side of murderers from Alaska and Hawaii with long sentences from bloody crimes committed decades ago. Shannon Holstein, of Kokopelli Dog and Puppy Training, and Kathy Swaney, of Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue, are on a mission to save dogs from euthanasia, making less popular breeds and mutts more adoptable through extensive training by inmates at the Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy. "It gives them purpose," Holstein said about the inmates. "It gives the dogs a second chance. These dogs in eight weeks get far more training than they would at home." .

Pit bulls battle stereotype

Even though the meaty dogs get a bad rap for being aggressive, people are still breeding, adopting and loving them. Like it or not, pit bulls are here to stay in Beloit and their owners couldn't be more proud. Behind every pit bull is its own unique tale.Zack and Pattie Dotson, employees for School District of Beloit, want to break the stereotype of the mean pit bull. Offices will go to the dogs when pooch-friendly day hits

Sure, every day can't be the weekend, your dog seems to say. But couldn't I come along and just curl up under your desk?

Well, at some companies, he could. And here's your chance to convince your workplace to join the party, at least for one day: June 22 is the ninth annual Take Your Dog to Work Day, as declared by the trade group Pet Sitters International.

Your boss may scoff at the idea - the kind of thing they do at those big California tech companies with their wacky, Frisbee-throwing corporate cultures. And it's true that firms like Amazon and Google are well known for their pet-friendly policies.

Rottweiler Rescue Makes Landmark Announcement

A small team of Rottweiler lovers have announced today that they have become only the second Rottweiler based organisation to be given charitable status. Zepthepep, named in honour of the dog that inspired the charity, Zephyr (pictured), have thanked the rescue website www.dogsblog.com for their help in acquiring this important status.

The Sheffield based charity has already re-homed 40 Rottweilers this year. John Swinhoe, who established the rescue organisation with his wife Mags, had this to say about their work so far.

"We will do whatever it takes to match the right dog into the right home for that particular dogs needs. No dog is ever knowingly placed into a situation by ZRR, where it would be chained up, used as a guard dog, neglected or used in any other way that would be detrimental to the dog's health and well being.

Local bulldog is Chicago mascot

Meatball arrived here Friday.

Unless greetings at the Avalon Estates home of Dominic and Bernice Marino count for anything.

By Saturday morning Meatball a 3-year-old, rescued, pure-bred, 52-pound English bulldog was basking in the sunshine with his traveling companion Alice Bean and owner/activist Molly Marino.

The trip from the Windy City was grueling, but not near the pace that Meatball has been living since being named winner of Fans Best Friend.

Meatball, who owes his life to Marino, a 1991 Howland High School graduate and marketing director at a Chicago investment research company, was chosen as the official mascot for Comcast SportsNets advertising campaign that hypes live games broadcast for the Chicago sports teams the White Sox, Bulls, Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks.
