Health Alert: Pet diseases

NATIONAL - More than half of all US households own a pet. And while pets provide companionship and comfort, they can also pass along up to 200 diseases to humans.

Eleven-week-old Maggie is a Cocker Spaniel puppy and the newest member of the Moreau family.

Seven-year-old Merit just can't get enough of her. But Merit's mother has her concerns. Megan Moreau says, "Having a child around and having her and the dog in her face, and playing with it after the dog's been outside, I did consider that."

Puppies are precious, but diseases they can carry, like rabies and ringworm, can be dangerous. So a visit to the vet should be the first order of business for new pet owners.

Bonnie Beaver, D.V.M., says, "One of the things the veterinarians will check for would be for intestinal parasites.

2 Loose Pit Bulls Injure Woman, Kill Poodle

(CBS) TUSTIN, Calif. Two loose pit bulls attacked and killed a poodle and injured its owner Wednesday, and one of the dogs escaped, prompting police to escort students at a nearby Tustin middle school onto campus as a precaution, a lieutenant said. A 75-year-old woman was walking her poodle about 6:30 a.m. in the area of 17362 Vinewood Ave. when two pit bulls "came out of nowhere" and attacked the dog, which was killed, said Tustin police Lt. John Strain. The woman tried to intervene but received lacerations on both hands, Strain said. She was taken to Western Medical Center was in stable condition, he said. Officers found both of the pit bulls and captured one immediately, which is believed to be the pup of the other dog, Strain said. Police shot the other dog with a Taser gun, but the animal was incapacitated only briefly and it ran off before officers could capture it, Strain said.

'Yappy Hours' and more for your dogs

I don't like the yappy little ones that nip at your feet or the loud, big ones that stick their noses in places they don't belong.

I like the ones that lie in the shade and gently snore. I liked my friend's boxer Samson (rest in peace) who was big and drool-y.

So when I was asked to be on the dog committee (aka the "paws" committee and the "Fifi" committee) for the park district, I was a bit hesitant. Everyone else on the committee has at least one pet. In fact, they have lizards and horses and cats and dogs and probably other animals roaming about their homes and yards that they haven't mentioned yet.

But I agreed because I am generally a nice person who looks like a dog lover. Little did I know that the committee, aside from planning fun events, had a secondary, more surreptitious goal: to make me the adoptive mother of some poor pooch.

Rusty's 1200km amazing journey

RUSTY, a dog given up for dead, has shocked everyone after appearing just north of Adelaide -- six months after disappearing from his backyard 1200km away in Canberra.

The dog, who somehow travelled across state borders to Two Wells, yesterday received star treatment as he left Adelaide with a dog handler.

How did the microchipped four-year-old bull terrier-cross cover the distance?

"One thing is for sure, he didn't walk," Rusty's owner, Shane Gowen, 21, said.

"Maybe he met a truckie who took him for a ride?"

SA RSPCA spokeswoman Aimee McKay said: "We have never picked up a dog so far from its home."

Pit bulls battle stereotype

Even though the meaty dogs get a bad rap for being aggressive, people are still breeding, adopting and loving them. Like it or not, pit bulls are here to stay in Beloit and their owners couldn't be more proud. Behind every pit bull is its own unique tale.Zack and Pattie Dotson, employees for School District of Beloit, want to break the stereotype of the mean pit bull. They are the parents of a deaf and albino pit bull named Jake.
