How we pick our leaders

That is low voter turnout. It is a rare local election in this area where more than 40 percent of the registered voters turn out to vote. The council election held in Riverside earlier this month saw 35.6 percent of eligible voters cast ballots.

Dangerous dog crackdown

“I think we have the strongest dangerous dog bylaw in the city," councillor Abe Gonshor said last month.$"/>$"/>The bylaw was sparked by recent incidents where a dog named Rosco bit two residents, one this past winter and another last summer. $"/>$"/>A dangerous dog is defined in the bylaw as one that “shows a propensity to attack or injure without provocation," actually attacks a person or animal, has been trained by its owner to attack on command and is a pure or mixed pit bull, Staffordshire bull-terrier, American bull-terrier and American Staffordshire terrier.$"/>$"/>The bylaw requires owners to make sure dogs do not attack people or other animals, are kept inside or in an enclosed outside area and, when off the property, are muzzled.$"/>$"/>Owners who violate the rules must remove the dog from the town and provide proof of this within 10 days of receiving a notice.$"/>$"/>“If the owner fails to comply after receiving the notice [demanding the dog's removal from the town], the public security director may cause the dog to be captured and turned over to the SPCA or euthanized," the bylaw says.

Rottweiler Rescue Makes Landmark Announcement

A small team of Rottweiler lovers have announced today that they have become only the second Rottweiler based organisation to be given charitable status. Zepthepep, named in honour of the dog that inspired the charity, Zephyr (pictured), have thanked the rescue website www.dogsblog.com for their help in acquiring this important status.

The Sheffield based charity has already re-homed 40 Rottweilers this year. John Swinhoe, who established the rescue organisation with his wife Mags, had this to say about their work so far.

"We will do whatever it takes to match the right dog into the right home for that particular dogs needs. No dog is ever knowingly placed into a situation by ZRR, where it would be chained up, used as a guard dog, neglected or used in any other way that would be detrimental to the dog's health and well being.

Chihuahua diagnosis good, vet faces court

Today the Chihuahua went to another vet for a diagnosis.

On her first birthday, this five pound pooch received some very good news.

"He thinks that her eyesight will be totally back," owner Maryann Deluca said.

The tiny Chihuahua made big news after it was injured during a visit for spay surgery on June 4th at the Sun City West animal clinic.

According to investigators, technicians allegedly saw Dr. Joshua Winston strike Bella in the head causing her right eye to pop out. Bella's owner said Dr. Winston called her immediately after the incident.

Dr. Joshua Winston was arrested, but he told us there's a lot more to the story and is confident his name will be cleared.

"During the course of good, standard care things can happen that are hard for someone outside the field to understand," he said.

Bathing the dog is so much easier with the right tools

The first one I remember was the original Rusty. He was a big beautiful classic sable collie. "Lassie" was big on TV then and we lived on a chicken ranch, so a collie was perfect for us. I was three years old. That dog is part of my earliest childhood memories. I do not remember much else about that time.

I sure do not remember when Mom and Dad washed the dog or how they did it. Fast forward to the next dog I remember: Tiny was a black, tan and white, shorthaired Chihuahua.

I was six years old and we lived in town in Calistoga. Tiny only liked my Mom and made it very clear he would bite anyone else.

I do not remember what happened to Tiny and Dad does not remember either. The next family dog I remember was the first dog that belonged to me, I was 10 years old. She was a small black cocker mix named Suzie Q.
