| YOUR WHOLE PET
In the next Your Whole Pet, I'll take a look at how to get a pet from ethical sources. In the meantime, when checking out a breeder, be sure that you can meet the puppy's mother and see where the puppies are being housed. And if the only test you have to pass to get the puppy is whether your check clears or your credit card charge goes through, that's a pretty good sign the breeder doesn't have the puppy's best interests at heart -- or yours. The following companies donated services, tests, medications, food and products to help the Oklahoma puppy-mill dogs: MWI Veterinary Supply, Fort Dodge, Purina, Bayer, Merial, IDEXX Laboratories, Antech Diagnostics and DVM Pharmaceuticals. Christie Keith is a contributing editor for Universal Press Syndicate's Pet Connection and past director of the Pet Care Forum on America Online.
Send pet to school
We have an invisible fence so he can run the whole yard, which is almost an acre in a small town. I have developed arthritis in my back so bad in the past year I cannot handle the dog physically and now cannot walk him on a leash as he needs. We tried a bark collar on him when he was a puppy. It worked, but he had diarrhea every time we used it. -- P.S. DEAR P.S.: You can't leave a German shepherd in a yard alone unsupervised until they are 2 or 3 years old, depending on their bloodlines. If you do, you'll develop a barking and/or guard dog aggression issue. I won't leave any dog in a yard alone unsupervised until they are adults. At the very least, without your guidance, they just learn to bark at anything. .
Healthy Pets Act could save millions of dollars
These people come to us from animal shelters, rescue groups, law enforcement agencies and veterinarian groups - a wide array of backgrounds united by the common goal of reducing the number of pets needlessly killed each year. But with any high-profile legislation there is always a vocal opposition as well, and in this case, breeders from across the nation have gone on the offensive. They will stop at nothing to defeat this common-sense measure - even if it means calling local Assembly members and threatening them with relocating their AKC National Championship out of Long Beach. These threats were made despite the fact that this bill very specifically and expressly exempts show dogs and animals from out of state. I commend Long Beach-area Assemblymembers Laura Richardson and Betty Karnette, who would not be bullied or intimidated by these unfortunate and undeserved threats.
Salt Lake County pets of the week
Sadie is a friendly and energetic husky/shepherd mix. She's playful and fun, and she seems intelligent and attentive. She definitely got her pale blue eyes from the husky side of her family tree. We recommend that Sadie live in a home without small children, because she has a lot of energy. Sadie's adoption fee is $95. .
Rusty's 1200km amazing journey
RUSTY, a dog given up for dead, has shocked everyone after appearing just north of Adelaide -- six months after disappearing from his backyard 1200km away in Canberra. The dog, who somehow travelled across state borders to Two Wells, yesterday received star treatment as he left Adelaide with a dog handler. Amazing journey: Click here to see a map of Rusty's 1200km journey. How did the microchipped four-year-old bull terrier-cross cover the distance? "One thing is for sure, he didn't walk," Rusty's owner, Shane Gowen, 21, said. "Maybe he met a truckie who took him for a ride?" SA RSPCA spokeswoman Aimee McKay said: "We have never picked up a dog so far from its home." Share this article What is this? .
